Violence Against Women

What is violence? It is the behavior involving physical force intended to hurt, damage or kill someone or something.

Violence against women is act of violence are committed against women & girls because they are female (powerless)

Both children and women are beaten and treated on the same way because they are not seen as a mature human being. They are not allowed to express themselves, and they are not expected to do that if they make mistakes, they are beaten.

Violence against women in the society, community, world is very common, Most women had been violence at place of work, family, community especially marriage.

 Violence against women at workplace

There are many fields at place of work, some fields are said not to be meant/suitable for woman, So if a woman is into that field she will be molested, abused, bullies.  Also, at the workplace if there is an argument between woman and man, the man will violence the woman by raising up his hand to beat her up because he knows that his stronger than the woman.

Violence in marriage against women

Still some men beat their wives because they are violent people, they cannot control their temper or behavior, and therefore they lose self-control and express themselves through violence. These men continue into beat their wives up because the victim is not speaking up or reporting to authority, community, family. In some cases if she speaks out, she will be blamed saying; why doesn't she bow, respect, obey, her husband, or she will be advised to endure in other to save her marriage especially when she had children or when she is not financial stable/ unable to take care of her children.

Most men had this mindset that have the full control over their women because they are the head of family.  Being a husband that doesn’t mean the wife is a slave, both the husband and wife has the equal right and decision on their marriage.

Sexual violence against women!

Sexual violence refers to any sexual act or attempt to obtain a sexual act, or unwanted sexual comments or acts to traffic, that are directed against a woman of sexuality using coercion by anyone, regardless of their relationship to the victim, in any setting, including at home and at work.

Rape is the term that is commonly used for the first type of sexual violence mentioned above (forced/coerced intercourse). Rape can be defined as non-consensual sexual penetration, however slight, of any part of the body of the victim with a sexual organ, or of the anal or genital opening of the victim with any object or any other part of the body. The invasion is committed by force, or by threat of force or coercion, such as that caused by fear of violence, duress, detention, psychological oppression or abuse of power, against such person or another person, or by taking advantage of a coercive environment, or committed against a woman incapable of giving genuine consent.

When a rape crimes is committed  the woman is said to be careless, the victim will be afraid of report/speak out to the community, authority, family, elders because she will be blamed for being careless (for example why does she wear that short trouser, short top, short skirt).

Most victim are afraid to speak out, because they think no man will marry a woman that has to be raped or in some cases the rapist is asked to marry the victim with the belief that no man will marry the victim.

Solution to violence against women

speak up, speak out, reports to the community, authority, family, friends, court of law.

Don’t force into any bad/unhealthy/ violence relationship or marriage

Fight for divorce when being violence in marriage because it damages women health and future (children)

Educate girls & women to be confident with their decision and be powerful & strong woman

Educate girls about sexuality 

Women supporting women / women fighting for women (Be your sisters keeper)

Men respect, adore, cherish every woman

 Educate men to be responsible 

Family supports the victim because family makes community
